Waukee CSD offers a wide variety of Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses that help students develop technical, academic and employability skills and engage in work-based experiences with industry partners.

Examples of CTE Courses:

ProStart:

ProStart is a two-year program that teaches culinary arts and restaurant management to high school students at Waukee CSD.

The program is supported by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation, in partnership with the Iowa Restaurant Association Education Foundation, and pairs with Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) to offer students college credit.

Integrating classroom learning with mentorship and real-world experience, ProStart teaches students essential management and cooking skills to prepare for a career in the food service industry. Additionally, the program offers opportunities for students to work with businesses and compete in events.

Course Information

Credits can be earned by attending DMACC. Talk with a DMACC advisor about how to be awarded these credits after enrollment.

ProStart I

  • HCM100 Sanitation and Safety – 2 credits
  • HCM143 Food Prep I Lecture – 3 credits
  • HCM144 Food Prep I Lab – 3 credits

ProStart II

  • HCM152 Food Prep II Lecture – 2 credits
  • HCM153 Food Prep II Lab – 2 credits

Student Organizations

A Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO) is an organization that engages in career and technical education activities as an integral part of the instructional program. CTSOs provide opportunities to develop and refine the skills students need in their chosen occupational area. Conferences, competitions, workshops, community service and other activities encourage leadership development and career exploration.Career and Technical Education Student Organization
