K-12 Computer Science Curriculum
From kindergarten through 12th grade, Waukee CSD computer science programs will empower students to develop curiosity, problem-solving, and collaboration skills, allowing them to become users and creators of global computing technologies. Students will be introduced to relevant tools to build confidence, foster connections, and develop an understanding of how technology impacts society.
Elementary Computer Science
In our elementary program, students explore fundamental concepts. In early grades, they learn to identify and describe computer parts, use technology respectfully, and understand the importance of passwords to protect information. As students advance, they gain skills in basic troubleshooting, selecting appropriate software for tasks, and understanding the role of hardware and software in computer systems. They practice creating simple algorithms, explore ways computers store and manage data, and learn how technology influences daily life.
Middle School Computer Science (Grades 6-8)
Middle school students continue exploration in 6th-grade technology and an 8th-grade elective course called Code, Create, Innovate. Both of these courses introduce students to foundational concepts, focusing on developing computational thinking and problem-solving skills. Students participate in hands-on activities and real-world applications through a variety of learning opportunities.
High School Computer Science (Grades 9-12)
In high school, there’s a comprehensive pathway for students to develop essential technical skills through courses like Cybersecurity, Programming in Python, Web Design, and AP Computer Science. Students explore key topics such as coding, web development, and digital security, gaining practical knowledge that prepares them for the evolving tech industry. Courses like Programming in Java and AP Computer Science Principles allow students to tackle complex computational thinking and problem-solving challenges, while Multimedia Applications foster creativity in digital content design. Aligned with Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), the program also provides leadership and competition opportunities to enhance technical and professional growth.
