K-12 English Language Arts/Literacy Curriculum
The Iowa Core English Language Arts (ELA) Standards provide a framework for Iowa students in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language. These standards ensure students develop the literacy skills necessary for college, career, and civic life. Iowa’s ELA standards are aligned with the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) but are tailored to the specific needs of students and educators in our state.
Elementary English Language Arts/Literacy
Elementary instruction aligns with the Iowa Academic Standards for ELA and Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects. These standards focus on foundational skills, reading literature and informational texts, speaking and listening, and language. Students actively read, write, speak, listen, and use language effectively. The Iowa Academic Standards build student knowledge, ground learners in text evidence, and guide them to work within grade-level texts.
Middle School English Language Arts (Grades 6-8)
The Iowa Core ELA Standards for grades 6-8 help students build a strong foundation in literacy skills and prepare them for high school, college, and career readiness. These standards emphasize critical reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language skills. Instructors focus on developing students’ ability to engage with complex texts and communicate effectively.
High School English Language Arts (Grades 9-12)
The Iowa Core (ELA) Standards for grades 9-12 prepare students for college, careers, and civic life by fostering advanced literacy skills. These standards guide high school students to analyze complex texts, write with clarity and purpose, and communicate effectively in various contexts. They emphasize critical thinking, evidence-based reasoning, and the ability to express ideas clearly in writing and oral presentations. High school students can choose from foundational and advanced courses. View individual course descriptions through the links below.
