6-12 Family and Consumer Sciences Curriculum

Waukee CSD Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) fosters the holistic development of students from diverse backgrounds, nurturing growth, wellness, and independence from 6th to 12th grade. We guide students to success by emphasizing personal growth, well-being, and community engagement. By providing stepping stones, fostering leadership skills, and embracing the learning process, we empower students to create their own journey while building confidence, resilience, and empathy. Our educators inspire and support every individual to become well-rounded, independent thinkers and compassionate leaders.

Middle School Family and Consumer Sciences (Grades 6-8)

The middle-level programs provide 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade students with essential skills for personal development, career exploration, and practical life applications. Leadership and Life Skills in 6th grade focuses on developing students’ personal responsibility, communication, and teamwork abilities. The 7th Grade FCS course introduces students to key concepts in nutrition, textiles, and housing. In Career Pathways, students explore various career options and begin identifying potential interests and skills that align with future opportunities. 8th Grade FCS builds on this knowledge with more in-depth learning on culinary skills, child development, and consumer awareness. Together, these courses help students grow personally and academically while exploring pathways to future success.

High School Family and Consumer Sciences (Grades 9-12)

The high school program provides students in grades 9-12 with hands-on learning experiences that prepare them for everyday life and their careers. As a people-centered science, FCS focuses on the study of individuals, families, and communities, aiming to help them live healthy, successful lives through education, research, and technology. Students can explore fashion, interior design, culinary arts, child development, and interpersonal relationships while enhancing their personal skills. The program is closely aligned with Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), offering students leadership opportunities, competitions, and community involvement to enhance their learning and personal growth.
