K-5 General Music Curriculum
The general music program for Waukee CSD is anchored in the Iowa Fine Arts Standards (adapted from the National Core Arts Standards), which helps students learn about music in fun and meaningful ways. The curriculum encourages students to create and perform music, respond to what they hear, and connect music to their lives. Students will explore music through diverse and collaborative experiences to foster growth and express creative ideas.
Elementary General Music
Music education for kindergarten through 5th grade includes engaging activities that promote creating, performing, responding, and connecting with diverse musical skills. Kindergarteners enjoy hands-on learning about musical opposites and voice types, including in an exciting school-day “informance” where they showcase their newfound skills. As students progress from 1st to 5th grade, they explore rhythms, melodies, and expressive movement, with formal performance opportunities to celebrate their talents. In 4th grade, students also begin playing the recorder, further enhancing a musical foundation. Elementary students meet with their music teacher twice in a six-day cycle.
Related Activity Offerings
Once students reach 5th grade, they can choose to add band and/or choir to their school-day schedule. Read more about these experiences on the Band and Vocal Music curriculum pages. Select students may also be invited to participate in the Waukee CSD 5th Grade Honor Choir held in the spring.
