6-12 Speech Curriculum

Waukee Community School District speech students will become empathetic, creative, and inclusive communicators through lessons guided by standards from the National Communication Association and the National Speech and Debate Association. Students will take risks as learners in a safe community as they begin to trust in themselves and the stories they have to tell.

Middle School Speech (Grades 6-8)

Students in 6th and 7th grade attend a required, exploratory nine-week course that combines elements of speech and theatre arts. They are taught about the different purposes of communication and how these purposes influence communication styles. Middle School students learn to identify key verbal and nonverbal communication variables, like volume and body language, and reflect on their strengths and areas for growth. They practice organizing information for outlined and extemporaneous presentations and incorporating peer and teacher feedback. Additionally, students develop effective delivery skills through rehearsal, purposeful physical and vocal choices, and by demonstrating good listening behaviors and audience etiquette. There are no courses in this curriculum area offered at the 8th-grade level.

High School Speech (Grades 9-12)

High school students are required to take one speech course before high school graduation. This decision reflects the belief that effective communication is an essential skill. Courses range from public speaking to persuasion and debate. The classes ask students to focus on effective communication and analyzing how various contextual factors influence communication outcomes. The curriculum focuses on the dynamic nature of communication, emphasizing the critical role of listening. It encourages students to examine their own communication patterns and biases, to improve their message-crafting and delivery skills.

Related Activity Offerings
