Waukee High School honored as AFS-USA Top Global Learning School

Waukee High School was named one of AFS-USA’s Top Global Learning Schools on April 8, 2016 for the school’s excellence in their foreign exchange program and commitment to international education. Waukee is one of eight schools in Iowa to receive the honor.

According to a statement by AFS-USA, “Waukee High School is a long-time supporter of intercultural education. Waukee encourages local students to explore the world around them by hosting an exchange student or going abroad. Students at Waukee are quick to embrace international students, welcoming them with open arms into their community.”

Waukee High School has an active International Club, which showcases the cultures and diversity already present in Waukee schools through various cultural awareness programs. Additionally, students in the club host an international panel and diversity potluck each year in order to introduce international students to the rest of the student body.

The student body is also regularly encouraged to host international students or explore the world themselves.

Principal Kirk Johnson accepted the award. “We are honored to accept this award. This is certainly a reflection of our students, staff and school community in Waukee,” said Johnson.

The Waukee Community School District strives to educate students to become global citizens and see their actions on a global scale. The district is dedicated to building genuine relationships by embracing individual differences and perspectives.

Along with the title of Top Global Learning School, Waukee High School students are now eligible for a $1,000 merit scholarship. This is a national scholarship centered around global citizenship. Three to five awards will be given.
