Waukee Community School District is dedicated to providing comprehensive programming that allow students to excel in academics, performing arts and athletics. Lyndsay Marron, principal of Walnut Hills Elementary, believes wholeheartedly in incorporating the arts into education and has been honored as this year’s Midwest Kodály Music Educators of America (MKMEA) Outstanding Administrator.

Marron, who has continuously supported a Kodály-inspired music education curriculum at Walnut Hills, was a guest at Kodály’s annual conference luncheon on Saturday, October 29, at Stoney Creek Hotel and Conference Center.

The MKMEA Outstanding Administrator Award is distributed to nominated individuals who provide help in terms of scheduling, facilities, interest, public relations, professional development and other ways that have enriched music education for students.

“Integrating the arts throughout the learning day enhances our students’ learning,” Marron said. “There is nothing we have learned without the arts. If you think about when we first learned the alphabet, we sang a song. When we first learn how to read, we used pictures to understand the text.”

Walnut Hills Elementary general music teacher Erica Seeley said she nominated Marron because of how Marron has integrated the arts into grade level classrooms.

“Her heart to integrate the arts and her incredible support are the reason I nominated her for this award,” Seeley said. “Teachers need to be loved, believed in and supported to grow and become better. That is what she does for me every single day.”

Marron said she has enjoyed working with different musicians, visual artists, performing artists, and classroom teachers.

“I plan to continue learning from the best: the teachers, students, parents, and support staff,” Marron said. “Waukee Community School District has always been about learning from one another.”
