Waukee High School Students Win IRFA’s Video Contest

Four students from Waukee high school placed first and second in the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association (IRFA) video contest.

Jacob Roush and Dylan Smith took home the grand prize of $1,000 with their video titled, “Choose Ethanol: Fuel the Future.” Amy Wieland and Tyler Groathouse received second and $600 for their video titled, “E15 – A Decision as Simple as Dinner.”

According to IRFA, the contest was focused on, “students who create the best video urging motorists to choose clean-burning, American-made E15 and/or biodiesel at the pump.”

Roush learned about the contest from his APEX instructor, Russ Goerend, and was excited to use his film skills, while also making a difference.  Roush was inspired by Dollar Shave Club commercials because of the energy and “swagger” that was shown throughout the commercial.

To create the commercial Roush first planned the script and the scenes. Next, he spent a few days filming and then editing.

“My favorite part about creating the commercial was filming. It was challenging as it was quite cold outside but also fun because we moved from place to place. My friend Dylan helped me out a lot with the shooting and it’s always fun to work on these projects with your friends,” Roush said.
