Waukee High School Fashion Club Participates in 24-hour Sew-a-thon

Waukee High School (WHS) Fashion Club participated in All People Quilt’s fourth annual 24-hour sew-a-thon event hosted at Meredith Corporation’s headquarters in downtown Des Moines. The goal of the event was to sew more than one million pillows for local charities.

WHS Fashion Club started six years ago, when a former student wanted an opportunity that enabled other students to express themselves through fashion. This student-run club meets weekly with help of their sponsor Laura VanWaardhuizen, a family and consumer science teacher at WHS.

“Students enjoy the ability to create and be inspired by one another. There is something very satisfying about making a tangible thing,” VanWaardhuizen said.

Five seniors make up the production team: Ga-Young Kim, Anna Nelson, Cady Ruble, Marisa Spahn and Ella Titus. This team takes responsibility for all aspects of the club including weekly meetings, the fashion show and other activities.

Fashion Club holds events throughout the year such as Model For a Day (MFAD), a themed release party and also a fashion show.

All high school students are welcome to participate. The fashion club meets after school every Wednesday in room 216 at the high school.
