Boundary Committee Reviews Feedback from Public Forum Attendees

On October 16, the Boundary Committee reviewed the feedback submitted by attendees of the second Comprehensive Boundary Public Forum. Approximately 250 stakeholders attended the forum on October 9 to learn more about the boundary process and share their opinions about two draft boundary concepts, building alignment and feeder options. Those who were unable to attend were offered an opportunity to complete the exit survey online.

Robert Schwarz and Jay Harris of RSP & Associates provided the committee with key discussion topics, comments and results of the Public Forum Exit Survey. After analyzing feedback for the elementary boundary, the committee was asked to consider the following items: what number of students should be assigned to Radiant Elementary School when it opens and if Radiant opens with a low student number, does it make sense to utilize Vince Meyer as fifth-grade overflow for Waukee Elementary?

Near the end of the meeting, RSP & Associates polled the Boundary Committee and the results were as follows:

  • 66% of the committee supported Radiant Elementary School opening with fewer than 300 students knowing that this would accommodate future growth.
  • 97% supported Vince Meyer being utilized for Waukee Elementary’s fifth-grade overflow.
  • 87% thought Concept 2 should be considered by the Board of Education.

The final activity of the meeting focused on building alignment and feeder options. Before conducting the final poll of the night, RSP & Associates asked the committee to consider how much the feeder options impact the building alignment choice? After committee discussion, 56% of the Boundary Committee supported Feeder Option 1, but opinions about building alignment were split with 46% supporting Alignment 1 and 41% supporting Alignment 3.

Next Steps

It is important to remember no decisions about boundaries were made at this committee meeting. The Comprehensive Boundary Process includes one final meeting scheduled for November 6. The committee is scheduled to present a recommendation to the members of the Waukee Community School District Board of Education on November 26, 2018. The Board is scheduled to take action on the recommendation at the meeting scheduled for December 10, 2018. While the final meeting is open to observers, only committee members may participate in the meetings.

  • 38% participates voted for Draft Concept 1
  • 62% of participates voted for Draft Concept 2

  • 43.1% of participants voted for Draft Concept 1
  • 56.9% of participants voted for Draft Concept 2

  • 84% of participates voted for Option 1
  • 10% of participates voted for Option 2
  • 6% of participates voted for Option 3

Online Form Results:

  • 77.1% of participants voted for Option 1
  • 12.5% of participants voted for Option 2
  • 10.4% of participants voted for Option 3

  • 52% of participates voted for Alignment 3
