Weather Update January 29-31

Due to dangerously low temperatures and wind chill, Waukee Community School District will have the following adjustments to the school schedule:

Tuesday, January 29

No evening activities after 6 p.m. including facility rentals and intramurals.

Wednesday, January 30 – NO SCHOOL

Waukee Schools will be closed and no activities. Beyond the Bell and YMCA Childcare will also be closed due to record-breaking cold temperatures. District Office is closed.

Thursday, January 31 – 2-hour Late Start

  • There will be a 2-hour late start.
  • No AM Preschool.
  • Buses will run their normal routes two hours late.
  • Beyond the Bell and YMCA before-school childcare will be open two hours late.
  • All before-school, extracurricular activities will be canceled.
  • No breakfast will be served.

The district has been following the weather forecast closely. The forecast indicates the possibility of wind chills in excess of -35 to -50 degrees. Skin freezes in as little as 10 minutes at -30 wind chills. Mechanical issues can occur in diesel buses in extreme conditions such as these and waiting at a bus stop or walking to school is dangerous.

The safety of our students is our top priority and we will continue to monitor the weather and adjust accordingly.
