Another Successful Drake Relays for Warrior Track Teams
For the third straight year, a Waukee track team is bringing home a Hy-Vee Relay Cup. The traveling trophy, awarded each year to the boys and girls team scoring the most relay points at the Drake Relays, will reside in a Waukee trophy case for another year. Highlighted by a victory in the meet’s final event, the 4×400 meter relay, the Waukee boys scored 34 points to win the cup for the second time. The Waukee girls won the Hy-Vee Cup last year.
The weekend continued an impressive run of relay success for the boys after winning the Kansas Relays Cup the previous week. The team of Sam Yeaway, Kahlil Hicks-Jumper, Zach Eaton and Aaron Smith set a Drake Relays record in the prelims of the 4×400 and then battled cold temperatures and high winds to win in the final. In total, the boys placed in five of the six relays contested. Along with the victory in the 4×400, the Waukee boys placed second in both the 4×800 meter relay and the 1600 meter medley and added a third-place finish in the 4×100 meter relay. A third-place finish in the 4×200 meter relay and a third-place individual finish by Aaron Smith in the 400-meter dash rounded out the boys place winners.
The Waukee girls also placed in five of the six relays and placed third in the girls’ cup standings. The team of Ainsley Schlicher, Kaliyah Perry, Delaney Taylor, and Natalie Harris won the 4×200 meter relay. It was the 16th time a girls relay has won at the Drake Relays. The girls also placed second in the Shuttle Hurdle Relay, third in the 4×400 meter relay and placed fifth in both the 4×800 and 4×100 meter relays.
