Waukee Jazz One Awarded Student Music Award

Waukee Jazz One was recently honored in DownBeat Magazine for their 42nd Annual Student Music Awards.  Waukee Jazz One was named one of four High School Winners in the Large Jazz Ensemble category for 2018 in the country, the other three schools were from California.

“This is a tremendous honor for our students, of whom I could not be more proud,” said Chris Strohmaier, Band Director.

DownBeat Magazine was established in 1934 and since then, has been the preeminent resource for all things current in the jazz world. In 1977, DownBeat began recognizing the future of jazz performance and education by publishing a list of outstanding ensembles and soloists at the junior high, high school, and collegiate level.  Programs from across the country are encouraged to apply with a list of Winners and Outstanding Performances published in the June edition of the magazine.

From DownBeat “We’re proud to present the results of the 42nd Annual DownBeat Student Music Awards (SMAs).  In this section of the magazine, you will read the names and see the photos of some of the finest young musicians on the planet.  Some of these youngsters are on the path to becoming the jazz stars and/or jazz educators of tomorrow.  In music as in sports, it takes much more than great talent to succeed.  Talent must be combined with hard work, rigorous practice and the support of caring, sensitive mentors.”

Congratulations Waukee Jazz One!
