Focus on Excellence
It’s hard to believe we are closing in on the end of the school year. I’m not sure where the past few months have gone, but I do know they have been filled with meaningful learning in our classrooms, opportunities to excel outside of the classroom and preparations for summer activities. In addition, nearly 670 Waukee High School seniors and their families are preparing for graduation on Wednesday, May 22. It’s an exciting time!
The cadence of a school year has been a part of my life since the time I entered kindergarten in September of 1965. (Yes, 1965!) As I prepare to exit public education after 36 years of service I reflect on the numerous opportunities to learn and lead alongside some of the very best. I am thankful to Mr. Rod Wilbeck, Supt. and Mr. Henry VanAartsen, Principal in Orange City, Iowa for taking a chance on hiring me as a new college graduate in May of 1983. What a journey it has been and given the opportunity to do it all over again I wouldn’t change a thing.
I also reflect on how my involvement in education has impacted my family. My husband of 25 years has supported my journey every step of the way. Each time I came home and asked him to line up some boxes and start packing he never once complained, but said, “Where do we get to move this time?” with a smile on his face. My daughters have been troopers along the way as well. It’s a time of change for all of us. My oldest was married a few months ago and my youngest is graduating next week from Waukee and headed off to college in August. During times of change, I am reminded that the best way to predict the future is to create it. With that in mind, I’m looking forward to ‘creating’ new adventures!
It has truly been a privilege and an honor to serve Waukee Schools. Have a great finish to the school year!
