District to Host SmartDevices SmarterParents Workshop Series
Waukee Community School District (WCSD) is inviting parents, students and community members to join an important conversation on how to be healthy consumers and users of technology on September 19 at 7 p.m. at the Waukee Innovation & Learning Center, 295 SE Ashworth Rd., Waukee, IA 50263.
As a district, we have noticed an increase in the frequency of conversations we have with students, teachers, and parents around cell phones, social media and mental/physical health connected to the use of technology. This is the first in a series of SmartDevices SmarterParents workshops aimed at identifying how school and community can work hand-in-hand to be part of a solution.
According to Pew Research Center survey, a whopping 95% of teens in the United States have smartphones now. That’s a 20% jump since Pew last examined the issue in 2015. With an increase in availability and use, two-thirds of parents expressed concern over how much their kids use their devices.
Each workshop will begin with some of the latest research, tools or information for parents of all ages followed by time to ask questions and then close with meaningful networking with parents who have similar questions and struggles.
As a district, we strongly believe these workshops will be a positive step in providing parents, teachers and even students with guidance, solutions, and support on how to be healthy consumers and users of technology.
