Virtual Brookview and Shuler 4th Graders get Creative with Civil Rights Projects

Waukee teachers are celebrating and educating about Black History Month in captivating and exciting ways. Virtual 4th grade classes at both Brookview and Shuler are getting creative when it comes to showing their new knowledge about Black History Month, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday, and many other civil rights activists.

The students were assigned two projects to complete. The first was a writing assignment to tie in what they have learned about Martin Luther King, Jr. While using resources to help them, they were to write a short paragraph about the knowledge they had gained.

The next assignment allowed for a little bit more activity. The students were able to choose one of four different projects. Their variety of options started with conducting a mock interview. After choosing and researching a civil rights activist, they created an interview with themselves answering how that activist would have responded to the questions. Their next option was to create a short skit of a scene from the civil rights movement between the 1950’s and 1960’s and then record it or perform it for the class. Another was a poster highlighting three non-violent protestors from a book they read called Enough. This poster included information about each of their protestors along with their opinion about the activists’ cause. Their last option was a digital movie. The video was to be a slide show style movie with images and a voice-over narration about three civil rights activists (past or present). This movie included information about each activist they chose, what they protested, and the student’s opinion on their cause.

The students chose their second project individually or in a group and had a blast presenting what they came up with to their peers. This is just a quick look into how all of the classrooms across Waukee CSD are educating their students in creative ways. It’s our hope lessons like these continue to motivate students throughout the district as well as bring light to such invaluable learning material.
