The Donut King at Shuler Elementary

Ray Becker brings energy to second grade and a recent Junior Achievement project at Shuler Elementary really caught his eye.

Students in Miss Newland’s 2nd grade class at Shuler Elementary were tasked with writing about a donut that they would like to sell in a donut shop if they were a baker. Let’s listen to Ray’s donut.

“My donut has green frosting on it, small cookies and a caramel drizzle. My donut is the best,” says Becker.

Part of the Junior Achievement project teach students to dream big. Every idea starts somewhere.

“I had seen on Facebook another student in the area had submitted their idea to Hurts Donut,” says Amanda Newland. “I showed students this picture and told them you never know what will happen.”

Enter Ray’s dandy donut idea.

“My dad and I went to Casey’s in the morning, I gave the paper to them and then I got a donut, just a normal donut,” says Becker.

But that was the last time Ray’s donut was just normal.

“Then the next day came and he sent us to where the pizza is and then we got the donut and then I got it in the car and drove to school,” says Becker.

Ray and cookie

That’s the last we saw of Ray’s one of a kind donut.

“I ate the slice of the caramel part first, then a cookie,” says Becker. “It was pretty good, the cookie was pretty crunchy.”

A simple donut, signals a successful 2nd grade project.

“That’s what we aim for as teachers is creating a lesson where kids are passionate about it, where they really want to invest themselves in the writing,” says Newland. “Giving it a real life purpose like this, where they care enough about it to try their very best.”

When you design a Casey’s donut, you deserve the official title that comes with it.

“He has coined himself the donut king,” says Newland. “He is hoping that this donut become part of the Casey’s menu.

Next time you are looking through the donut rack at Casey’s and see one that doesn’t look exactly normal, it could be Ray’s next big idea.

“I was thinking of a long john with chocolate in the front, but then black frosting, that tastes like those candies that are like twisting and black,” says Becker.
