Waukee Elementary Students Learning Supply and Demand with the Experts

Second grade social studies is in full swing in Mrs. Bolten’s classroom at Waukee Elementary.

“We are learning about goods and services,” says Logan Lloyd.

“A good is something where you get something and it’s something that you want,” adds Frankie Putz.  “A service is something someone gets ready for you.”

This week Mrs. Bolten is bringing in a special guest via Google Meet, John Bosley of Bozz Prints in Des Moines.

“He can just show us that he is good at art and he can do anything or draw anything,” says Ava Hofman.

When teachers can pair a classroom lesson to a real-life example, student learning comes full circle.

“These are things they are going to remember about 2nd grade,” says Stephanie Bolten. “They are going to remember meeting an artist who lives in Des Moines, who started in his basement and worked really hard and accomplished all these goals and makes these awesome pieces of artwork.”

When you have an expert on hand, you are obviously going to bring some questions.

“How long does it take you to make your artwork and do your customers love your artwork?” wonders Hofman.

“I want to learn how long it takes him to paint something,” adds Lloyd.

Along with supply and demand in social studies, students are always looking for examples of leadership. This conversation checks that box as well.

“It shows people that you should do this and people might do that and then you could be a good leader,” says Hofman.
