State Grant Helps Waukee CSD Teachers Enhance Tech Skills
More than 40 Waukee CSD teachers are getting an upgrade in computer science knowledge thanks to a state grant.
Computer Science Grant
This grant allows teachers to obtain their computer science endorsement through Northwestern College. Teachers began classes in January and will complete the endorsement in August 2025. Our educators are gaining valuable skills in coding, analytical thinking, and data analysis.
“By having endorsed computer science teachers, Waukee can continue to offer robust and engaging STEM education, preparing students for future careers in technology and other STEM fields,” says Waukee CSD Technology and Innovation Leader Shannon Fleming.
Staff members with this endorsement are a valuable asset to our District, as it signifies specialized training in computer science.
Excitement About the Course
“When I discovered I would be taking the class, I was first excited about the opportunity to learn something new! I was also excited to participate in the course with fellow Waukee educators!” exclaims Katelyn Moe, a third-grade teacher at Radiant Elementary.
All of our participating teachers understand the importance of continued education and keeping your brain sharp.
Moe continues, “To be the best teacher you can be, you need to understand that anyone can continue their learning journey — it’s never done!”
Implementing The New Learning
Abby Goeller, a technology teacher at Sugar Creek Elementary, is another educator taking part in the online courses.
She adds, “These classes will allow me to develop meaningful experiences for our students that help them understand the world of computer science at a fundamental level.”
Goeller is thrilled to implement her new knowledge, especially a fun program called Scratch. This block-based coding platform teaches students problem-solving and collaboration skills.
Meanwhile, Alli Webb, a fifth-grade teacher at Maple Grove Elementary, is already beginning to incorporate what she learns into her classroom.
“I hope to start to integrate items this year or next year with different opportunities for students to try and enhance their learning in a variety of ways, as well as collaborating with our tech teacher to develop ways we can better partner together for tech and classroom teachings,” she explains.
This marks the third time Waukee CSD has participated in this computer science grant since it launch in 2018.
