Brookview Teacher Receives Classroom Grant

IMG 3260Ginger Akason, a third grade teacher at Brookview Elementary School in the Waukee Community School District, was one of eight teachers statewide selected for the Greater Iowa Credit Union’s $1,000 Project Classroom grant. The grant funds can be used for classroom supplies, technology, equipment, and field trips.

“I was very excited to learn I had received the grant,” Akason says. “Once I was able to think about how I could put that money to use, it felt like such a gift!”

Akason was recognized during an on-field presentation at an Iowa State University football game in October along with the other award winners.

IMG 3279On Feb. 25, ISU Athletics and the Greater Iowa Credit Union organized a check presentation for Akason in her classroom. Cy the mascot was on-hand to take pictures, sign autographs, and pass out posters and snacks to the students.

“The kids absolutely loved having Cy visit our class,” Akason says. “He was very generous and shared autographed posters with the kids, played games, and even brought treats. It was also fun for them to see the big check.”

Akason plans to use the money to create an indoor garden and sensory spaces for students.

“The goal is to give teachers some tools to help kids reconnect with nature, and Iowa’s weather does not allow for kids to have those opportunities all year long,” she explains. “I want kids to explore, learn, and regulate their minds and bodies to improve their overall health.”
