Waukee CSD Students Explore Ireland and China Over Spring Break
Waukee CSD students and staff had an incredible spring break as they traveled to Ireland and China, representing the District while experiencing new cultures and making unforgettable memories.
Waukee Northwest Royal Brigade in Ireland
The Waukee Northwest High School Marching Band, led by directors Christopher Strohmaier and Chad Friesleben, took their talents to Ireland for an exciting eight-day trip. The highlight was performing in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Dublin, where they marched alongside bands from around the world. The trip also included visits to landmarks like the Cliffs of Moher, Kilkenny Castle, and Trinity College. Along the way, students soaked up Irish culture through sightseeing, hands-on activities, and trying new foods.
Marching band member Braden Steenhard described what it was like to be part of the parade.
“The parade was amazing. It was incredible to see all of the other bands, and some of us even got to talk to Irish band members, which was really fun,” Braden said. “The parade itself went by pretty quickly, and we had plenty of time to stop, breathe, and regain our energy before continuing. I’ve also never seen that many people in one place at the same time. It was exciting and inspiring to see them cheering for our band.”
Diving into Chinese Culture
Another group of Waukee CSD students and teachers spent their spring break in China as part of an exchange program with the Hebei Lianbang Foreign Language School. Students stayed with host families and got a firsthand look at Chinese culture through activities like fan painting, calligraphy, and Kung Fu tea, plus a fun baking session with local kindergarten kids. They also visited famous sites such as the Shijiazhuang Railway Station, Hebei Museum, and the historic Zhaozhou Bridge. The trip continued in Beijing with visits to must-see spots like the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, and the Temple of Heaven.
For student Catelyn Mead, staying with a Chinese host family was the highlight of her trip.
“I’ve never felt so welcome in a new place. I became great friends with my host student, Jasmine, and we went shopping and explored the city together,” Catelyn said. “Her mom introduced me to so many new things and made me feel so at home. I also had hot pot with her dad, brother, and extended family — they all welcomed me with open arms as we shared delicious food. Jasmine helped me communicate with her family by speaking both English and Chinese, and we got along great! I left with cool souvenirs, handmade calligraphy, and friendships I’ll never forget.”
Experiences of a Lifetime
Both trips offered students and staff with a once in a lifetime opportunity to represent Waukee CSD on an international stage while experiencing the best of Ireland and China!
